What do the letters Ah stand for on a car battery?
Ah means ampere-hour. On a car battery it describes charge capacity (current × time), not voltage or cranking power. Learn what Ah tells you, what it doesn’t, and when to convert to Wh.

Short answer: Ah stands for ampere-hour. On a car battery it is the battery’s charge capacity, defined as current in amperes multiplied by time in hours. It does not indicate voltage or starting power. One ampere-hour equals supplying 1 ampere for 1 hour under the rating’s test conditions SunLith Energy: Ah vs Wh explained.
What Ah really means on a car battery
Ah is a capacity label. If a battery is rated 60 Ah, an idealized interpretation is 1 A for about 60 h, or 5 A for about 12 h, and so on. Actual runtime varies with discharge rate, temperature, chemistry and the manufacturer’s rating conditions SunLith Energy: Ah vs Wh explained. Ah is separate from voltage and separate from cranking performance.
Because Ah measures charge, two batteries with the same Ah can store different amounts of energy if their voltages differ. Energy in watt-hours (Wh) links the two: nominal Wh ≈ Ah × V MAXScanner Ah ↔ Wh calculator.

Ah vs Wh: when to convert
Compare Ah among appropriate automotive batteries at the same nominal voltage and with matching rating conditions; check chemistry, test rate and temperature in the specifications. Convert to Wh (nominal Wh ≈ Ah × V) when you need to compare energy across different system voltages, or when your accessory is specified in watts rather than amps SunLith Energy: Ah vs Wh explained; MAXScanner Ah ↔ Wh calculator.
Example conversions:
- 60 Ah at 12 V → 720 Wh
- 60 Ah at 24 V → 1,440 Wh (more energy at the same Ah because voltage is higher)
What Ah does not tell you
- Starting power: Car starter performance is captured by cold cranking amps (CCA), which is a different measurement emphasized on starting batteries Anker SOLIX: What are amp hours?.
- Peak discharge capability and charge acceptance: These depend on battery design and chemistry, not the Ah number alone SunLith Energy: Ah vs Wh explained.
- Exact runtime: Ratings are based on defined test conditions. Cold temperatures and high discharge rates reduce usable capacity SunLith Energy: Ah vs Wh explained.
Estimating accessory runtime from a car battery
For a constant-current load, a first-order estimate is Hours ≈ Ah ÷ A. For a watt-rated load, convert capacity to energy first and use Hours ≈ Wh ÷ W. Both are planning estimates. Real use depends on voltage during discharge, allowed discharge depth, losses, temperature and the battery’s actual rating conditions MAXScanner Ah ↔ Wh calculator; SunLith Energy: Ah vs Wh explained.
Example: A 60 Ah, 12 V battery has about 720 Wh nominal. An accessory drawing 60 W could theoretically run for about 720 ÷ 60 ≈ 12 hours in ideal conditions. Do not treat that 12-hour arithmetic as usable starter-battery runtime. Keep the required starting reserve and follow the vehicle’s discharge limits; a starter battery is not intended for repeated deep discharge.

Replacing or choosing capacity for your vehicle
VARTA’s automotive specifications list Ah capacity and cold-cranking performance separately. Keep those requirements separate when checking the replacement specified for your vehicle.
Match your vehicle’s specified battery type and nominal voltage first. A higher Ah number is not by itself a reason to change capacity. Use the vehicle maker’s approved technology and capacity range, including AGM or EFB requirements where specified. Check whether replacement requires registration or coding. Ah does not raise system voltage or guarantee higher starting performance. Always ensure the battery’s physical size, terminals, and hold-downs match your vehicle, and that your charging system is appropriate for the chosen capacity. For starting performance, check the maker’s CCA specification separately from Ah Anker SOLIX: What are amp hours?.

FAQ
Is 1 Ah the same as 1,000 mAh?
Yes. 1 Ah = 1,000 mAh. When needed, convert energy with nominal Wh ≈ V × Ah SunLith Energy: Ah vs Wh explained.
Does Ah indicate voltage?
No. Ah measures charge capacity. Voltage is separate. To compare energy across voltages, use nominal Wh ≈ Ah × V MAXScanner Ah ↔ Wh calculator.
